Bridging the Gaps for 'All Healthy Children' in New Mexico

Thousands of kids across New Mexico depend on programs like Medicaid and S-CHIP for health coverage. The "All Healthy Children Act" currently before Congress would expand eligibility for both. Children's Defense Fund president Marian Wright Edelman says it would be a big help.

"There are over nine million uninsured children in America. Ninety percent of all uninsured children live in working households, people playing by the rules, can't make ends meet."

Bob Greenberg is a retired pediatrician in Albuquerque. He says programs like S-CHIP are essential for children all across New Mexico.

"Indeed, in many rural areas in New Mexico, the majority of patients that pediatricians are seeing are children who are covered by CHIP or Medicaid."

The proposed program would allow families with incomes over 300 percent of the federal poverty level to buy coverage for their children that includes all medically necessary health services. It would also combine Medicaid and S-CHIP to streamline the application process. Edelman believes it has a chance of making it through Congress this session.
