Turnabout: Environmentalists Praise Sununu
Monday, April 23, 2007
Concord, NH - Sen. John Sununu is in an unusual position this Earth Day week -- he's receiving praise for his recent actions to fight global warming. On Friday, Sununu announced that he is the lead Republican co-sponsor of the "Clean Air Planning Act of 2007," which aims to significantly reduce levels of carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and mercury in the air. Jan Pendlebury, director of the New Hampshire chapter of the National Environmental Trust, was quick to praise his turnaround.
"Sen. Sununu should be commended for cosponsoring the Clean Air Planning Act of 2007. This is truly a milestone for the senator, who has hedged on calling for caps on carbon emission."
The Clean Air Planning Bill was authored by Delaware Sen. Tom Carper, and has the support of a bipartisan group of lawmakers, as well as many utilities and environmental groups.
Pendlebury notes that part of Sununu's turnabout may be due to damage from global warming he has seen around the world.
"Sen. Sununu has witnessed first-hand many of the dire effects of the warming climate during his recent trip to the Antarctic, and also years ago to Norway, not to mention what is happening right here in New Hampshire."
Earth Day observances continue throughout the week in New Hampshire.
