Veto Stamp Override Rally in Charleston

Thursday, May 3, 2007

"No" is an answer that's made them angry. Parents of Iraq War soldiers, Iraq war veterans and West Virginia community groups are rallying today to show their dissatisfaction with President Bush's veto of a bill that would have set a timeline for bringing the troops home. The Rev. Jim Lewis with the Episcopal Diocese of West Virgini says poll after poll clearly shows that Americans want the war to end, and that's why Congress voted to do just that.

“The voice of the people. We've got to continue to preach this. The voice of the people finally will override the veto of the president.”

Rallies are going on nationwide. Opponents of a timeline say it would create chaos. An attempt to override the veto failed in the House yesterday, now backers of a timeline for bringing our soldiers home are meeting with the president to seek a compromise.

The Rev. Lewis says those rallying are also there to show their admiration for the troops, including the West Virginia soldiers who left for Iraq this week.

“They're being faithfully obedient to the Commander-in-Chief, and they're trying to protect their buddy on the right-hand side and on the left-hand side, and I really know what that's about.”

The rally is today, 5:15 p.m., Robert C. Byrd Federal Building, 300 Virginia Street East, Charleston. Other groups organizing the rally include the American Friends Service Committee, WV AFL-CIO, and the West Virginia Citizen Action Group.
