FARMINGTON, N.M. – Las bodegas de los bancos de alimentos están en alerta mientras una gran cantidad de bomberos y voluntarios continúa trabajando contra los incendios de Nuevo México. Porque si bien han surgido algunas buenas noticias de los frentes de fuego en el estado en los últimos dos días, los de Las Conchas y Donaldson siguen consumiendo un número sin precedente de acres. Y mantener abastecidas con agua y comida a miles de personas que se enfrentan al fuego, no es tarea fácil.

Sara Kaynor, directora ejecutiva de ECHO, Inc., organización que opera un banco de alimentos que aprovisiona a la mayoría de programas del norte de Nuevo México, dice que tienen dos bodegas llenas de suministros destinados a desastres naturales y otras emergencias, y que están en alerta.

"Esa comida se tiene actualmente como suministro de emergencia para el gobierno en cualquier momento. Y de hecho, con el incendio de Cerro Grande hace 11 años, necesitaron gran cantidad de comida para alimentar a los bomberos."

Agrega que los bancos de alimentos están para aprovecharse también como ayuda a quienes han sido desplazados por el fuego, y que la asistencia puede ir desde un par de días hasta varios meses, cuando una familia pierde su hogar o su empleo.

Kaynor afirma que también ve un repunte en las donaciones, debido a que otras personas alejadas de los incendios quieren ayudar, y se necesita más ayuda.

"Todos los bancos de alimentos están aceptando comida, agua, alimentos para perros, para gatos – ese es otro problema grande – y contribuciones en dinero."

Así que a la pregunta de si es posible combatir los incendios con comida, la respuesa es: sí es posible.
