SACRAMENTO, Calif. - "Fuera manos!", es la voz que envían los defensores del Social Security a la Casa Blanca, en respuesta a la supuesta intención del Presidente Obama de hacer recortes a Social Security y Medicare. Se ha dicho que la Casa Blanca está considerando una propuesta para modificar el método por el que se calculan los pagos que hace Social Security, "transladándolos" del programa al Índice de Precios al Consumidor. Este cambio pudiera ayudar a reducir la deuda nacional, pero al mismo tiempo pudiera reducirle los beneficios a millones de personas retiradas.

Ernie Powell, Director Defensor de AARP California, dice que esta organización se opone a cualquier propuesta de reducción presupuestal que haga recortes que afecten las prestaciones de Social Security y de Medicare.

"Social Security no causó el déficit, no tiene que ver con el déficit, es un programa solvente y paga su propia operación. Y es un programa del que dependen los miembros de la AARP y sus familias, y más de 50 millones de estadounidenses."

Los grupos sindicales también están tronando su látigo al calificar de inaceptable cualquier recorte a Social Security. Powell afirma que este sistema de seguridad social es una tabla de salvación que mantiene fuera de la pobreza a millones de estadounidenses.

"La mitad de los beneficiarios viven con ingresos de menos de $22 mil anuales. Mucha, mucha gente lucha por pagar la renta, la comida. Así que necesitamos proteger a Medicare, proteger a Social Security."

Powell declara que rechazarán cualquier propuesta que recorte las prestaciones que los adultos mayores han ganado a lo largo de toda una vida de trabajo duro.

"Es una prestación ganada que pagamos durante toda nuestra vida laboral y cuando llega el momento de redimir el beneficio, ahí está esperándonos."

Los legisladores del Capitolio se reúnen hoy buscando llegar a un plan de reducción del déficit que permita aumentar el endeudamiento antes del 2 de agosto, fecha que el Departamento del Tesoro anunció como límite para autorizar endeudamiento.
