"Smoke Signals" From Neighbors Could Speed Up Wisconsin Ban

May 15, 2007

Lawmakers in Minnesota and Illinois have passed statewide public smoking bans this month. Dona Wininsky with the American Lung Association of Wisconsin says that gives added momentum to the drive for a similar ban in the Badger State.

“We're just seeing this happen everywhere, and Wisconsin always has had a tradition of being a progressive state. I'm confident we'll get this done this year.”

Opponents of the statewide ban have called for an exemption for taverns, and say that it will hurt small businesses. Supporters call it a public health issue, and argue that the ban will benefit the health of workers and customers across the state.

One concern about a Wisconsin ban is that it would drive customers into neighboring states, and Wininsky believes that's less of an issue now.

“Because Illinois and Minnesota now have smoke-free laws, that should alleviate a lot of their concerns about border-hopping from state to state.”
