Volunteers Still Needed for Planned Parenthood Book Sale

September 27, 2011

DES MOINES, Iowa - Thousands of books, DVDs, and other items go up for sale this week in Des Moines as part of the Planned Parenthood Book Sale, regularly one of the biggest events of its kind.

Michele Guinn, co-chair of the event, says the fundraiser brings in hundreds of thousands of dollars for programs operated by Planned Parenthood of the Heartland.

"We made almost $450,000 last year between the spring and fall sales, and all those funds support the education and resource center of Planned Parenthood, which provides age-appropriate health care information to about 60,000 kids, parents and teachers."

Guinn says the event begins Thursday at the state fairgrounds but they still need volunteers to help man the tables.

"There is a short three-hour shift. The sale runs from Thursday to Monday, and as a thank-you for our volunteers they are allowed to take any remaining books home after the sale for their personal use."

Guinn says this year, as in past years, a highly-collectible book was donated to the sale. An autographed copy of Martin Luther King's first book, "Stride Toward Freedom", is available.
