Concern Over Global Warming Peaks ... on a Mountain in NH

June 4, 2007

Concern over global warming is climbing to new heights, and today a Massachusetts Congressman will lead a mountaintop summit on the issue in New Hampshire. Chairman Ed Markey and the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming will meet on Cannon Mountain. Markey says climate change is causing bad weather events and a drop in tourism for the region. But committee spokesman Eben Burnham-Snyder says the hearing will also focus on a possible economic boost for the region with the development of "green-collar" jobs.

“We could create a half a million green collar jobs within the next five to 10 years by really changing over our infrastructure to a lower carbon economy.”

Snyder adds that the new jobs would be in areas like wind energy, ethanol, and other renewable energy sources. He believes the green collar industry would not only be good for the environment, but also the economy.

“New England can be a big part of that, with a lot of the things that are going to reenergize our economy. It’s going to bring in new, good paying jobs, and affect our environment in a positive way.”

Today's hearing starts at 11 a.m. in the lodge at the summit of Cannon Mountain.
