Annapolis Priorities for 50+: Utilities, Long-term Care, Safety

January 16, 2012

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Utility bills, health care and consumer protection are at the top of the list in Annapolis this year for Maryland's people over 50, according to AARP Maryland. The elder organization's associate state director for advocacy, Tammy Bresnahan, says it's all about quality of life, which includes balancing family budgets, and she's heard a lot of concern about utility rate hikes.

"That's as well as the other things that are going on with utilities, like reliability, stability, and ensuring that there's good customer service when there is an outage, especially a severe outage."

Bresnahan says there will also likely be legislation introduced to protect older Marylanders from fraud and abuse.

She says older residents repeatedly say they want to stay in their homes rather than go to nursing homes, so AARP will be watching the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene budget closely.

"Making sure that in that budget for long-term care, the community choice option, aging in place, will remain stable and not get any cuts."

AARP Maryland represents more than 830,000 state residents.
