TN "American Dream" Delivery for Immigration Bill

June 28, 2007

Tennessee moms waving American flags and serving up apple pie. It's an early 4th of July celebration today as immigrant mothers and their kids deliver pie and flags to Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander's office. Jessica Baba with the Tennessee Immigrant and Refugee Rights Coalition says the Senate is expected to decide today if immigration reform will move forward, and she believes the time is right to make big changes.

“The workable solution to the issue is to understand that our lives and our values are deeply intertwined with the condition and fate of immigrants.”

Baba reports there are at least 12 million undocumented immigrants living and working in the U.S. She says there's strong support for an orderly immigration system that keeps families together, has a clear rule of law, preserves human dignity, and secures the borders. And for many, the status quo is not acceptable anymore.

“Right now, the current immigration system is in crisis, and it's up to all Americans to come together and fix it.”
