Coloradans: Make Health Insurance Exchange User-Friendly

March 19, 2012

DENVER - What do Coloradans want from the planned medical insurance exchange in the state? A report out today finds that easily-accessible help is at the top of the list. The study interviewed more than 700 Coloradans statewide, asking them how the Colorado Health Benefit Exchange could best serve them.

Danny Katz, director of the Colorado Public Interest Research Group (CoPIRG), says Coloradans recognize that they need help navigating what can be a complex topic, and they expect the Colorado Health Benefits Exchange will fill that role.

"Health care is a complicated thing to purchase. It's not like buying a car. It's not like going to the grocery store. And that's one of the challenges."

The Colorado Health Benefits Exchange is being developed as one of the provisions of the Affordable Care Act. The report was developed by CoPIRG, along with the Colorado Consumer Health Initiative and the Colorado Center on Law and Policy.

Katz says Coloradans prefer personal assistance via the web, in person, or by telephone.

"I think that's one of the biggest challenges for this exchange is that a lot of people want a lot of different things. So, I think the expectations are definitely going to be high."

The one consistent finding? Coloradans are strongly opposed to automated phone systems to find health insurance information.
