NH Women Say Congress Must Battle the "Baby Blues"

July 16, 2007

New Hampshire women are calling on Congress to help fight the baby blues. A bill called "The MOTHERS Act" aims to battle postpartum depression, a set of conditions that can range from sadness to suicide. The bill would provide for more research, education, and treatment. But passage is far from certain because similar bills have failed to get an up or down vote in each of the last several sessions. And Concord psychologist Linda Zollo says another failure of Congress to act would leave New Hampshire women without the support they need.

"In the state of New Hampshire, we're pretty limited in the kind of services that are available, and with the passage of the Mother's Act, women all over the country will benefit tremendously."

Zollo is the New Hampshire coordinator for Postpartum Support International. She believes it's time to recognize postpartum depression as a genuine illness that can be treated and overcome. She explains that postpartum depression is really a range of conditions that go far beyond the new mom.

"Postpartum depression is not just an issue that affects women, but it has long-reaching impact on the emotional status of her partner and the cognitive development of her baby and children."

"MOTHERS" is an acronym for "Mom's Opportunity to Access Health, Education, Research, and Support." Information about the MOTHERS Act is available online by going to the Library of Congress site, thomas.loc.gov, and searching for bill number S.1375.IS, or by visiting www.thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/D?d110:16:./temp/~bdcTeq::|/bss/d110query.html.
