Ohio Grandparents Raising Grandkids: "We Need Help!"

July 20, 2007

When Ohioans plan for their golden years, raising their grandchildren isn't usually at the top of their list but over 86,000 Ohio grandparents are primary caregivers for their grandkids. Many of those grandparents will be meeting at a first-of-its-kind statewide conference Friday in Columbus. Joy Gibbs of Toledo is raising three granddaughters, from age four to 15. She says she and many others are doing the job of foster parents, but aren't getting the same level of support from the state.

"There are resources out there and there's a lot of help, but we really need a few more perks that the foster parents get. They get a lot more money, and they get respite care and a lot of other things."

She explains that one common problem is that money saved for retirement and assisted living ends up going toward child-raising so additional financial help is vital. The conference is hosted by the Ohio Grandparent-Kinship Coalition.

Gibbs adds that part of the problem is that many grandparents don't know about help that's available. She didn't find out about things like health care assistance until she joined a support group.

"Nobody told me that the children qualify for Medicaid. So, I now get the Medicaid and a small stipend."
