State Fair Shows off Benefits of Wind Power

August 9, 2007

It's "show and tell" time at the Iowa State Fair. Most Iowans have never seen a real wind powered electric turbine in operation, but starting today, those attending the fair will have a chance to see what many are calling Iowa's "energy future." A full-scale wind turbine has been set up to power the entire fairgrounds, including the midway rides. Iowa Renewable Energy Associatio Executive Director Michelle Kenyon Brown says it shows that renewable electricity has a "powerful" role to play in the state's energy portfolio.

"There is no reason why we have to continue fall back on old carbon-laden energy sources like coal, which throw green house gas emissions and mercury back into the air."

Brown believes the scientific proof on climate change means it's time to re-think how energy systems are designed. She adds that the Iowa State Fair wind turbine is an example of how locally generated electricity can meet local energy needs.

"One of the solutions is community wind power so we can produce the wind right where we need it."

The turbine will power the fair for its entire run.
