INDIANAPOLIS – One in five Hoosier women reports being raped in her lifetime, according to statistics released last year by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention - and the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology reports that nearly 5 percent of rapes result in pregnancy. The issue was highlighted after recent comments about rape and pregnancy by Republican U.S. Senate candidate Richard Mourdock.

David Sklar, vice president of the Health Access and Privacy Alliance of Indiana, a reproductive-rights organization, says policymakers shouldn't be forcing their religious beliefs on women, especially considering how it affects a victim during a time of crisis.

"We would just encourage voters to really take a look at the candidates that they're looking to support and see if their positions on these particular issues fall in line with their own."

Mourdock said during a senatorial debate that he opposed abortion even in the cases of rape and incest. He clarified to say that he abhors rape and sexual violence, but because of his faith he believes life is the greatest gift from God.

Sklar says the comments give Hoosier voters something to think about.

"For an organization like ours, that are consistently working on this issue - just sort of took this as an opportunity to draw attention to some of these extreme viewpoints that are taking hold here in Indiana."

Mourdock faces Democrat Joe Donnelly for the U.S. Senate seat after defeating longtime incumbent Richard Lugar in the primary.
