Giving Oregon Family Caregivers a “Gift of Time”

August 28, 2007

Oregon's caregivers are about to receive a little care themselves. Next week, many of the millions of people who take care loved ones will get the chance to take a break at the “Gift of Time” conference in Salem. Organizers say they’ll help caregivers understand how important it is to take some time for themselves. Nurse Janice Wollcott says that’s something a lot of people forget.

"By learning how to care for themselves, they give better care to their loved ones."

A recent study from AARP shows family caregivers in Oregon provide an estimated 4.6 billion dollars worth of care every year. Bandana Shrestha, with AARP Oregon, says the work is stressful, and caregivers need to take time to rejuvenate themselves.

"If caregivers are not in good health, they’re not going to be able to continue to provide the care and support they need to provide."

The Gift of Time conference runs September 7-9 in Salem. Registration closes August 31.
