Día Mundial del SIDA: Se anima a residentes de Iowa a un chequeo

DES MOINES, Iowa – Mañana (sábado), es el Día Mundial del SIDA y se llevará a cabo una vigilia con velas en las escaleras del Capitolio de Iowa. El tema es "Trabajando juntos para una generación libre de SIDA" y una gran parte de ese esfuerzo es la detección. Las compañías de seguros están obligadas bajo la Ley de Salud Asequible cubrir una sesión anual de asesoramiento sobre el VIH y chequeo para las mujeres sexualmente activas, así como también para individuos que están en mayor riesgo de contraer el virus. Kim Lingner, educadora de salud, dice que es ahí donde el Planned Parenthood del Heartland ayuda.

"Planned Parenthood juega un papel importante en traducir los nuevos requisitos Vamos a ampliar el acceso a la atención de la salud. Somos uno de los principales proveedores de pruebas de detección del VIH en los Estados Unidos, así que lo que vamos a hacer es ayudar a conseguir mayor conocimiento e información para estos pacientes."

Añade que con casi 1,900 residentes de Iowa viviendo con VIH o SIDA, ahora es el momento de hablar con amigos y familiares acerca de la enfermedad. Lingner anima a que todos se hagan un chequeo.

"Los jóvenes representan alrededor del 40 por ciento de todas las infecciones nuevas a nivel mundial. Hay también grupos demográficos que tienen índices desproporcionados. Los latinos representan infecciones en uno de cada cinco personas; los afroamericanos representan casi la mitad de todas las infecciones por VIH; y los hombres gays y bisexuales representan alrededor del 61 por ciento de todas las infecciones nuevas.”

Durante la vigilia se honrará a las personas cuyas vidas se han visto afectadas por VIH o SIDA
