CA Survey: Healthcare Reform Wanted…Now

September 7, 2007

Sacramento, CA – Ask California elders what their top legislative concern is and most will say "healthcare," according to a new poll. Impatience is detected in the poll from AARP that surveyed members about healthcare, water quality, education, traffic jams, and the prison system. Van Ellet, of AARP California, says 80 percent of those surveyed share the same worries.

"They're concerned about healthcare, their ability to afford it and have access to it. I think seniors have had a remarkable 'coming together.' They recognize that this is an opportunity that doesn't come along every day, and now is the time to get something done about it."

Ellet refers to the opportunity to effect change in state healthcare laws. He says the poll is especially timely because, with only about three weeks left in the state legislative session, lawmakers and Governor Schwarzenegger already have been working on healthcare reform packages for six months. Ellet hopes the poll results spur them to think of California's senior citizens in the debate.
