MOSES LAKE, Wash. – El debate nacional sobre la reforma inmigratoria llega este fin de semana a Washington, con los eventos del “Citizenship Day” (Día de la Ciudadanía), en cuatro ciudades del estado. Abogados voluntarios e intérpretes ayudarán a los tenedores actuales de “green cards” a que inicien sus trámites para obtener la ciudadanía.

Y es que el camino hacia la ciudadanía de los Estados Unidos puede ser largo y confuso, hasta para quienes están aquí legalmente. Esta semana los eventos del “Citizenship Day”, Día de la Ciudadanía, serán atendidos por voluntarios que ayudarán a recorrer el trámite. Entre ellos, una será Natasha Burns, traductora voluntaria que se hizo americana en enero luego de haber iniciado el proceso en un Día de la Ciudadanía. Originaria de Rusia, dice que es mucho el papeleo que debe llenarse y puede ser intimidante, aunque la persona hable inglés.

“Por supuesto -dijo-, haz todas las preguntas que necesites. No tengas miedo de que la pregunta sea, ya sabes, estúpida o tonta. Si no saben la respuesta, siempre te dirán 'Déjame encontrar a alguien que pueda responderte.’”

Burns será honrada este mes con el reconocimiento a su servicio voluntario que le entregará el Gobernador Inslee. Los eventos del Día de la Ciudadanía tendrán lugar este sábado 27 en Moses Lake, Mount Vernon, Tacoma y Vancouver. Son organizados por el programa Washington New Americans (Nuevos Americanos de Washington). La coordinadora de este programa, Jessica Scruggs, dice que 170 mil personas de Washington son elegibles para obtener la ciudadanía, y que la reforma inmigratoria aumentará esa cifra.

Esa necesidad podría ser mucho, mucho mayor , y simplemente no hay suficientes abogados migratorios -explicó- ni suficientes programas como el nuestro para satisfacer la demanda que hay. Así que tendremos que ponernos creativos para asegurar que todos puedan completar este nuevo proceso que estamos viendo.

Los aspirantes deben dar información sobre dónde han vivido, trabajado, estudiado y viajado durante los cinco años pasados, además de nombres de parientes, pago de impuestos y más. La información sobre las locaciones y orientación sobre qué documentos llevar están en la página de internet WAnewamericans.org.

Scruggs estima que este fin de semana estarán muy ocupados los intérpretes, abogados y paralegales voluntarios.

Así que es un proyecto muy personal para quienes hacen este trabajo, y creo que hay una gran esperanza y un gran miedo. Hemos llegado ya muy cerca -agregó-, y en serio queremos asegurarnos de que pase de una manera que sea justa y humana, y realmente otorgue un camino seguro hacia la ciudadanía.

Dice que el programa vigila de cerca el progreso de la reforma inmigratoria en el Congreso.
