DES MOINES, Iowa - After retirement, many seniors discover they want to do something with their free time - but find they need extra money for living expenses, so they start second careers.

For those who are at that point and not quite sure where to start, AARP has a website to help: LifeReimagined.org..

"You can go on," said Iowa AARP spokeswoman Ann Black, "and there is this diagnostic tool that you can experiment with and really assess where you are, where you want to be, and make a plan."

Many people at midlife and beyond are looking for that dream job they always wanted, Black said. One good way to see if that career choice is really a "dream" is to volunteer first in the field, she said.

"Volunteering is a great way to explore options and see if what you're thinking about is a good fit for your skills," she said. "And the 'LifeReimagined.org' has volunteering section to it."

As older people enjoy years of good health, she said, many are eager to find work that gives them more personal satisfaction - and a chance to make a difference in their communities.

The website is at LifeReimagined.org.
