What if Your Summer Remodeling Project Uncovers Asbestos?

Monday, July 22, 2013

DES MOINES, Iowa - July is Asbestos Awareness Month, a reminder that the natural mineral fiber was widely used to insulate houses up until the early 1980s. Many of Iowa's older homes are loaded with asbestos, and a home repair or remodeling project is almost certain to uncover it.

According to Iowa DNR air quality supervisor Brian Hutchins, many products in the home are likely to contain dangerous asbestos fibers.

"Floor tiles, linoleum and also the adhesive that's used to glue those materials down" are among the areas where the carcinogenic insulating material can be found, he said. "It can be found in drywall; it can also be found in things like sprayed-on ceiling texture; and, in addition to that, roofing materials."

His advice is to call in a professional and have suspicious items tested, since if they prove to be asbestos, it has to be handled with care.

"They would put up what's known as containment where the area is sealed off," Hutchins said. "Typically they're wetting those materials as they are being removed to prevent any dust from entering the air."

He said they will then pack the removed asbestos in special bags for disposal in a landfill.

More information about products that contain asbestos can be found on the DNR website at iowadnr.gov and at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's website at epa.gov.
