Medicare vs. el Mercado de Seguros: Aclarando la confusión a los Ilinoisanos

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – El período de inscripción anual abierta a Medicare está en marcha, y se empalma con la inscripción abierta al nuevo mercado de seguros creado bajo la Affordable Care Act (Ley de Cuidado Asequible). Esto ha causado algo de confusión entre los habitantes de Illinois.

Heather Heppner, experta en el tema y directora estatal asocialda de comunicación en AARP Illinois, opina que es importante que quienes ya tienen Medicare sepan que esos otros mercados no les afectan.

"Desafortunadamente hay algunos timadores que se enfocan a los beneficiarios de Medicare. Es ilegal que alguien le venda con conocimiento un plan del mercado a un beneficiario de Medicare."

Quienes cumplan 65 años en 2014 pueden comprar ahora un seguro en el mercado que entrará en vigor el primero de enero, y una vez que tengan derecho a la cobertura de Medicare pueden cancelar ese seguro del mercado. El plazo para la inscripción abierta a Medicare termina el 7 de diciembre y hasta entonces la gente puede adquirir los planes Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement y Pedicare Part D, que cubren medicinas recetadas. De acuerdo a la Kaiser Family Foundation, en Illinois había más de 1.9 millón inscritos a Medicare en 2012.

Quienes quieran conservar su plan actual de Medicare nada necesitan hacer, pero lo que Heppner sí recomienda a todos es que se tomen unos minutos para revisar con atención su cobertura.

"Como los costos y beneficios de muchos de estos planes cambian de un año al otro, este período de inscripción abierta a Medicare brinda una oportunidad muy buena para revisar tu plan y saber con seguridad que seguirá satisfaciendo tus necesidades el año próximo."
