La batalla del Aborto se calienta en DC y Tennessee

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – El 2014 podría ser un año decisivo en el tema del aborto para Tennessee y también para todo el país. Los votantes del estado irán a las urnas en noviembre del año próximo para votar la Enmienda 1, y el mismo año podría también votarse el plan nacional para censurar el aborto después de la semana 20 de embarazo.
En el Senado de los Estados Unidos ya fue presentada una iniciativa que busca evitar el aborto después de ese lapso.

Steven Emmert, jefe de operaciones en Planned Parenthood of Middle and East Tennessee (Paternidad Planeada de Tennessee Centro y Este), dice que la propuesta es inconstitucional e innecesaria, pues aproximadamente sólo el uno por ciento de los procedimientos se llevan a cabo con el embarazo tan avanzado.

“Hablamos de que los abortos que se practican después de las 20 semanas son casos aislados, y por lo general esto se debe a problemas médicos o complicaciones trágicas que evitan que el embarazo se descubra a tiempo”

La iniciativa surge del Senador Lindsey Graham de Carolina del Sur, South Carolina, quien hace un llamado a los líderes para que se vote antes de las elecciones intermedias de 2014. La Cámara de Representantes aprobó ya este verano una iniciativa similar.

Emmet manifiesta su esperanza de que la ciudadanía preferirá el “No” cuando vaya a las urnas en noviembre del año próximo para votar la Enmienda 1. El hecho de aprobarla otorgaría a la Legislatura estatal el poder para crear leyes sobre el aborto.

Para permitir que la Asamblea General promulgue cualquier regla y restricción que quiera sobre el aborto, y le quita a la mujer derechos a la privacidad que están consignados en la Constitución Estatal.

Los partidarios de la Enmienda 1 dicen que los legisladores deberían establecer una política sobre el aborto para Tennessee, y no para las cortes.
