Doyle, Great Lakes Governors Make a “Splash” in Presidential Politics

November 9, 2007

Madison, WI – Governor Doyle and seven other Great Lakes region governors have sent a challenge to Presidential candidates. They're calling for a commitment to restore and protect the lakes. Joyce Harms, of the group Clean Wisconsin, says the candidates should pay attention, because there are a lot of votes riding on Wisconsin and other Great Lakes states.

"The Great Lakes are pivotal when it comes to who sits in the White House in the next go-round. Great Lakes issues should be at the top of every Presidential candidate's agenda. Everyone throughout the region knows what an important element the Great Lakes are, as part of the economic engine of the region."

The governors are calling on each candidate to commit to a plan that would fight invasive species, stop mercury and sewage pollution, and keep Great Lakes water from being diverted to other areas of the country.
