WV’s DC Delegation Gets Holiday Message: “Bring Troops Home”

November 20, 2007

Charleston, WV – West Virginia's Congressional delegation has the week of Thanksgiving off, and they're getting an early holiday present. It's a petition from almost 1,000 West Virginians, asking them to do their parts to bring American troops home from Iraq. Paul Sheridan with West Virginia Patriots for Peace says it's up to Congress to take the lead on ending the war.

"The Administration has made it very clear that they are not going to end this war unless they are compelled to do so and we want our Congressional representatives to act to bring the war to an end."

Sheridan believes Congressional leaders have been reluctant to act against the war for fear of being accused of not supporting the troops.

"It isn't, in fact, 'supporting our troops' by continuing to keep them in the midst of a civil war and pursuing a failed strategy. If we're really serious about supporting our troops, we will be acting to bring the war to an end."

The petitions will be presented at Congressional offices today and tomorrow. Congress left an Iraq War-funding bill on the table last week, after an effort to require troop withdrawals was blocked.
