No Need to Wait: CT Begins Online Voter Registration

Tuesday, February 25, 2014

HARTFORD, Conn. - Don't wait until the summer, when you may be on vacation and miss the deadline. Thanks to a new change in state law, Connecticut residents can now register online to vote. For those who want to cast a ballot in the primary election for this year's governor's race, there's still plenty of time: you need to be registered by August 5. That's a long way off, but according to Pua Ford with the League of Women Voters, there is no need to wait, thanks to a very recent change in the law.

"If they have been too busy to register by the usual means, they can do it by computer at any time of day," she said.

In addition to being able to get online, Ford said, there is one more thing people will need to register under the new system.

"To use the online registration system, they have to have a driver's license or a learner's permit so that they are in the DMV system, because this is how we verify their information."

Same-day registration rescued more than a dozen voters who found out they were not registered for last year's November election, but Ford said registering online and well in advance is a better way to ensure your place in the voting booth for the next election.

"The primary message is that it is one more way for people to get registered and not have to worry about the deadline," she urged.

Ford is also a Registrar of Voters in Bethany, so she saw the change take effect last week. Connecticut is now the 15th state in the nation where online registration is available.
