It's "Melanoma Monday" in Nevada, Nation

CARSON CITY, Nev. - It's "Melanoma Monday" in Nevada and around the nation. The public awareness campaign aims to put the spotlight on the deadliest form of skin cancer. Kristen Power, Nevada Cancer Coalition communications director, says the event, created by the American Academy of Dermat1ologists, is meant to promote early detection and prevention for melanoma and other types of skin cancer.

"Early detection is really important in terms of survival rates. Melanoma can be a very treatable disease if it is caught early. Once it gets into stage 3 and stage 4, it's much more difficult to treat," Power says.

It's estimated that over 450 Nevadans will be diagnosed with melanoma this year, she adds, and about 70 will die from the disease. According to the American Dermatological Association, one in 20 Americans will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime, and one person dies from melanoma every hour.

The Silver State gets about 300 days of sunlight each year, which makes taking precautions even more necessary, she warns.

"It doesn't matter if it's clear or overcast, or how long you're actually spending out in the sun. Every bit of sun exposure actually can damage your skin. Whether it's a tan or a burn, that's your skin reacting to the UV radiation that you're getting, and it can cause all sorts of different skin cancers," she explains.

Melanoma Monday also helps kick off May as "Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month."
