Finding Solutions to Homelessness for the Holidays... and Year-Round

January 2, 2008

Denver, CO - "Home for the holidays" has a special meaning for many Coloradans this year. The Colorado Coalition for the Homeless (CCH) has helped hundreds of people and CCH Director B.J. Iacino says her group has been honored for one of its programs that offers affordable housing and long-term solutions to homeless Coloradans. CCH transformed the old Denver YMCA into affordable apartments, now called "The Renaissance at Civic Center."

"We provide housing for homeless individuals, as well as those at risk of becoming homeless. We also serve low-income workers in downtown Denver who couldn't otherwise afford to live so close to where they work."

Iacino notes that homelessness is a complex problem, and solutions should go beyond a roof over one's head.

"[The CCH] includes counseling, vocational and employment services. Help is also available for residents with histories of mental health or substance abuse issues."

The Fannie Mae Foundation recognized the Renaissance project; CCH runs similar programs in other locations throughout Colorado.
