Concord, NH - New Hampshire could require cleaner cars if not for the federal government blocking the road. Yesterday the Sierra Club and four other organizations joined in a lawsuit aimed at overturning the E.P.A.’s decision to forbid California from implementing stricter tailpipe emissions standards. Every northeastern state but New Hampshire wants to adopt the same rules, but Granite State field representative Kurt Ehrenberg says the federal government is holding up traffic.

"States should be able to take action to combat global warming on their own and not have a federal agency like the E.P.A. get in their way."

E.P.A. officials argue state programs would create a 'confusing patchwork of rules' and that recently passed federal fuel-efficiency standards are sufficient to cut greenhouse emissions. Ehrenberg explains if the federal government would give states a green light to demand cleaner cars, the nation could get on a fast track to innovation.
