Nevada Attorneys Train to Better Represent Clients

RENO, Nev. - Hundreds of Nevada attorneys who practice law mostly on consumer issues are training this week to learn how to better represent their clients. Herb Santos, president-elect with the Nevada Justice Association, says his organization's members are learning about the latest changes in state and federal laws at the group's annual convention, being held in Napa, California.

"Anytime a law is being changed, or there's some nuance or modification, it's very important to us to make sure we're evaluating how it's going to effect the citizens of our state," says Santos. "Basically, I look at the trial lawyers as being one of the voices of citizens making sure their rights are protected."

Santos says there could be further changes to workers compensation and other laws resulting from the 2015 session of the Nevada Legislature. Consumer attorneys handle personal injury and product liability cases, workplace discrimination and other employment-related problems.

As an example of ever-changing laws, Santos cites the recent court ruling that legalizes same-sex marriage in Nevada. He says marriage equality is going to require some major revamping of the state's family laws.

"Attorneys that practice family law will want to be involved in the programs that we'll have to basically address those things, so we can ensure all citizens have access to justice in the State of Nevada," says Santos.

The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals determined Nevada's law banning same-sex marriage violated the constitutional rights of same-sex couples.
