AUSTIN, Texas – La participación electoral de Texas regularmente está entre las más bajas del país. Pero este año el Estado tiene la cifra récord de 14 millones de electores registrados, y con las elecciones a sólo una semana de distancia, se redoblan los esfuerzos para que vayan a votar con una identificación válida.

Fueron largos los litigios y muchas las adecuaciones sobre el requisito de contar con una identificación con fotografía para votar. Finalmente la Suprema Corte de los Estados Unidos emitió su fallo la semana pasada haciendo obligatoria esa exigencia. Albert Morales, del Advocacy Alliance Center of Texas (Centro de Alianza de Defensoría de Texas), explica otras opciones.

"Deben presentar una identificación válida de Texas," de acuerdo a Morales. "Hay varios tipos de identificación que también se aceptan -dijo y puso ejemplos-: permiso para portar armas, identificación del ejército y pasaporte americano también sirven."

Los votantes también pueden presentar la licencia de manejo expedida en Texas, una credencial de identificación personal, un certificado de identificación electoral o incluso su constancia de ciudadanía americana con fotografía.

Pese a la cantidad nunca antes vista de tejanos registrados para votar este año, Morales no se confía. Dice que ellos siguen trabajando como si esa cifra no existiera. No pierden de vista la elevada tasa de abstencionismo del estado, que regularmente está entre las más elevadas del país.

"Estamos organizando bancos de teléfonos para llamar a la gente y recordarle, sin tendencia partidista alguna -advierte-, que vayan a votar," de acuerdo a Morales. "Les damos información como ubicación de la casilla más cercana y el horario en el que están abiertas."

En la elección de 2012 sólo la mitad de los electores potenciales del estado emitieron su voto; y en 2010 fue sólo uno de cada tres.
