Reporte: Casi 900,000 niños de Texas, sin seguro de salud

AUSTIN, Texas - Una investigación publicada recientemente detectó que casi 900 mil niños y niñas de Texas carecen de seguro médico. El reporte señala que el Programa de Seguro de Salud Infantil es clave para lograr la cobertura de los niños, y destaca la necesidad de un fondeo sostenido a ese programa.

Aunque el número de niños sin seguro de salud sigue bajando lentamente, a nivel nacional el estado sigue teniendo una de las tasas más elevadas de infantes sin seguro. El estudio advierte que además podría haber nubarrones en el horizonte. Una de las grandes interrogantes de seguir adelante es si el congreso votará por aumentar el fondeo al Programa de Seguro Médico Infantil, algo que Laura Guerra-Cardus, directora asociada del Children’s Defense Fund - Texas (Fondo para la Defensa de los Niños en Texas), considera "crítico."

"Tuvimos una generación de niños que de veras se beneficiaron con el CHIP y deberíamos asegurarnos de que la próxima niños la misma oportunidad, para que puedan triunfar en la escuela y en la vida."

Del 2011 al 2013, el índice de infantes no asegurados en Texas cayó del 13.2 al 12.6 por ciento. Pero a pesar de esa leve declinación, aún hay casi 900 mil niñas y niños en Texas sin seguro médico, de acuerdo a lo detectado por el reciente estudio del Georgetown Center for Children and Families (Centro Georgetown para los Niños y las Familias). Es la voz de su Directora Ejecutiva, Joan Alker:
 
"El otro hallazgo interesante este año es que los niños de familias trabajadoras que viven al borde de la pobreza, son los que tienen la más alta tasa de no aseguramiento, comparados con otros grupos de ingresos."

Guerra-Cardus explica que, si Texas aceptara fondos federales para ampliar Medicaid, los pequeños de esas familias también podrían ser ayudados porque los niños sin seguro, con padres que estén cubiertos, tienen más posibilidades de recibir los cuidados preventivos necesarios y otros servicios de salud.
