Minnesota's Largest Annual Food Drive Begins Sunday

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The arrival of March on the calendar this Sunday also marks the beginning of the state's largest annual food drive.

The March Campaign from Minnesota FoodShare last year raised more than $8 million and 4 million pounds of food. Director Suzanne Shatila said the goal is even higher this year as demand remains strong.

"Even though there has been some economic recovery, that hasn't led to an increase in wages for a lot of people," she said, "and because of that, we haven't really seen a decrease in the number of individuals and families who are utilizing those (hunger) programs."

The money and food donated during the March Campaign is expected to supply some 300 shelves across the state with what they need for six full months.

The March Campaign includes everything from individuals and businesses donating time or money at local food shelves, to church congregations and community groups organizing food collections. At the Channel One Regional Food Bank in Rochester, executive director Jennifer Woodford said they serve around 100,000 people a year, and vital to their success is the March Campaign.

"It's such a unique opportunity where food shelves come together all across the state and talk about the issue of hunger," she said, "We talk about it every month of the year, but it really gains some traction when everyone is talking about it and how when we all come together, we can do more."

Details on what, how and where to donate locally can all be found online at the Minnesota FoodShare website, gmcc.org/minnesotafoodshare/marchcampaign.
