Un nuevo recuento de emisiones de gas de invernadero vinculadas al petróleo, gas y carbón extraídos de tierras federales, muestra que en los Estados Unidos más del 20 por ciento de dichas emisiones pueden ser rastreadas hasta tierras públicas. El reporte de The Wilderness Society (TWS) y el Center for American Progress (CAP) hace necesario un inventario completo de esos recursos, y estrategias para reducir tales emisiones.

“Pero no creo que realmente hayamos revisado las verdaderas fuentes iniciales –los recursos que están siendo sacados del suelo, especialmente en tierras federales que son propiedad de todos los estadounidenses.”

El Presidente Obama emitió una orden ejecutiva ayer (jueves) pidiendo que la contaminación por carbón del sector gubernamental se reduzca en un 25 % para el año 2025 - pero no incluyó la vinculación con la tierra pública que aparece en el reporte. El estudio también aporta estimaciones de las emisiones originadas por la ventilación y la quema de gas butano en tierras y aguas federales, prácticas que han incrementado más del 50 por ciento la presencia de metano desde 2008.

Claire Moser, asociada de investigación y defensoría en el Centro por el Progreso Americano, CAP por sus siglas en inglés, dice que es necesario contar con un inventario completo para actuar de una manera efectiva.

“Esas emisiones no son regularmente tomadas en cuenta, y deberían serlo. Cualquier estrategia exhaustiva para enfrentar el cambio climático en este país debería incluir estas emisiones y presentar además una estrategia para reducirlas.”

El reporte señala al carbón de las tierras públicas como la mayor fuente de emisiones de gas de invernadero.
