ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The commitment to climate action that President Barack Obama emphasized in his State of the Union address this week came as ideal timing for one North Carolina organization.

The Collider is opening in Asheville in February, and the business and education facility has a goal of providing a forum and community for individuals, governments and businesses to collaborate in an effort to take action against climate change.

Collider CEO Bill Dean says the region is poised to play a major role in the future.

"There are no boundaries to this,” he states. “Asheville has the scientific capability and the people here. With those capabilities, it's just like any other hubs of technology of expertise. We definitely want to create a hub and it's an unfilled gap or niche in the marketplace."

In addition to having a community largely invested in climate protection, Asheville is home to the National Centers for Environmental Information and the world's largest repository of environmental and climate data.

The federal government has collected climate and environmental data in Asheville for the last 65 years.

Dean says he's already had meetings with members of the Obama administration about how The Collider can help facilitate the president's goals.

"We want to bring about these ideas and foster a collaboration not only with federal laboratories, but other universities around the world that are looking at this, private-sector companies and businesses that are looking at this," he states.

The Climate Change Business Journal estimates the climate change industry was a $300 billion industry as of 2013.

Dean says other global economic experts predict a potential $10 trillion in climate adaption infrastructure investments in the future.
