Report: Hundreds of Florida Sea Turtles Drowning in Fishing Gear

Pensacola, FL – It's that time of year when Florida's sea turtles get special treatment, with nesting sites roped off and beach businesses dimming their lights so nesting isn't interrupted. But once back in the water, almost 800 loggerhead sea turtles die each year when they get caught in trawl fishing gear, according to a new report from Oceana.

Marine wildlife scientist Elizabeth Griffin says while shrimp trawls are required to install devices that give turtles escape routes, they're the only trawls that have that rule.

"What people don't know is that there are other sorts of trawl fisheries, and these are killing large numbers of sea turtles."

Oceana is asking the National Marine Fisheries Service to require turtle escape devices on all trawls. And they want trawl fishing gear pulled from the water when sea turtles are most abundant –- a request the fishing industry says could send some trawlers out of business.

However, Griffin warns that sea turtles are disappearing fast, even though they're listed as a threatened species.

"The greatest number of these sea turtles nest in Florida -- about 90 percent of the population. Nesting is down in Florida by 50 percent over the past decade."

The full report is at www.oceana.org.
