Ron Paul’s “Rally for the Republic” Vies with the RNC for Attention

September 2, 2008

St. Paul, MN – While the Republican National Convention is not yet fully underway because of Hurricane Gustav, there's no delay for former Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul's independent convention, also in the Twin Cities. Paul will present his new "Campaign for Liberty" at a rally today in Minneapolis.

Campaign spokesman Jesse Benton says Paul's alternative convention has a couple of important aims: to send a positive message to the Republican Party, and to encourage a spirit of cooperation when it comes to protecting personal liberty and sound fiscal policy.

"We want our Constitution respected. We want our privacy and our civil liberties respected, and we want a strong national defense where we stop policing the world."

In Benton's view, the Republican Party has changed to the point that many conservatives from the previous generation don't recognize it. It's Ron Paul's goal, he adds, to bring it back to the basics.

"The Republican Party is supposed to stand for limited government, it's supposed to stand for the Constitution, it's supposed to stand for the rule of law."

Paul won 24 percent of the popular vote in Idaho's Republican primary in late May. More than 10,000 tickets have been sold for his speech today.
