SEATTLE -- A partir de esta semana los trabajadores que brindan cuidados a domicilio están en la lista de prioridades para tener equipo de protección personal -- si su cliente muestra síntomas de COVID-19. El sindicato de personal de cuidados SEIU 775 y los trabajadores dicen que necesitan más equipo de protección.

El personal de cuidados a domicilio atiende a la gente más vulnerable al COVID-19 y necesita más equipo de protección para hacer su trabajo. La Presidenta de la unión de cuidadores SEIU 775, Sterling Harders dijo que esta semana el Estado de Washington acordó designar cuidadores a domicilio -considerados como trabajadores esenciales- en la lista de prioridades para recibir equipo de protección personal. Pero pueden recibirlo sólo si están cuidando de alguien que muestre signos o ha sido diagnosticado positivo para coronavirus. Sterling Harders dice que es un gran primer paso, pero insuficiente.

"El personal de cuidado sale de su hogar diario. Cuidan a sus clientes, los llevan de compras, los llevan a sus consultas médicas y no es justo esperar que los cuidadores hagan todo ese trabajo y no se les dé el equipo que precisan para hacerlo de manera segura."

Harders destaca que tareas como ayudar a alguien a salir de su cama o a comer no pueden ser hechas a una distancia de seis pies. Agrega que si los cuidadores pueden mantener a la gente fuera de los hospitales, será más seguro para todos.

Desirae Hernández, cuidadora a domicilio, atiende a tres clientes en distintos hogares y dice que compró 60 mascarillas hechas en casa para darle a otros cuidadores. Regularmente Hernández dice que no puede permitirse enfermarse porque demasiada gente depende de ella.

"En lo que se refiere al coronavirus, no puedo enfocarme en mi salud - sólo puedo tomar todas las precauciones porque esa gente sigue necesitando mi cuidado."

Harders dice que los cuidadores no tienen el equipo apropiado y sí tienen miedo, pero siguen haciendo su trabajo.

"Quiero asegurarme de que cuando se cuente la historia y se mencione a los trabajadores de la salud como héroes de esta historia, que se incluya a los cuidadores."
