CA Environmental Scorecard Analyzes 2008 Legislative Session

December 2, 2008

As a new class of lawmakers begins work at the state Capitol, they are reminded of their predecessors' environmental record. The annual California Environmental Scorecard grades members of the legislature and the governor on how they voted on key pieces of legislation.

David Allgood, Southern California director for the California League of Conservation Voters, says Governor Schwarzenegger's score of 60 percent would have been higher had he not vetoed a bill to reduce air pollution near the state's major ports. However, says Allgood, high marks were given for the passage of a groundbreaking land use reform bill.

"It will reverse priorities and incentives to ensure existing urban spaces get the attention and the resources they need to become more livable and more transit-friendly."

The League is also optimistic about President-elect Obama's commitment to the environment, according to Allgood.

"It's a breath of fresh air. President-elect Obama has shown himself to be fact-driven, rational and logical. Given the current situation in the world, there is no other conclusion to come to than that we have to deal with this and that we have to deal with it quickly."

Depite Democratic lawmakers greatly outscoring their Republican counterparts, Allgood applauds the 2008 legislative session's bipartisan cooperation and the formation of a new Energy, Environment and the Economy caucus among Assembly Republicans.
