Universidades comunitarias buscan regreso de estudiantes después de COVID

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Colegios comunitarios de todo el país se están preparando para otra caída en las inscripciones de este año, especialmente entre los estudiantes de color.

Los datos del National College Attainment Network muestran que solo alrededor del 55 por ciento de los estudiantes del último año de secundaria han solicitado ayuda financiera federal.

El National Student Clearinghouse Research Center informa que en 2020 la inscripción por primera vez disminuyó un 13 por ciento en general y casi un 20 por ciento entre los estudiantes latinos.

Paul Fiest, de la oficina del Canciller de los Colegios Comunitarios de California, dice que la pandemia ha afectado gravemente la vida de estudiantes potenciales.

"Muchos de nuestros estudiantes enfrentan desafios como perder sus trabajos, salarios mas bajos, ademas de tener que cuidar a sus hijos mientras son educados en el hogar," explica Fiest.

Fiest señala que la inscripción a colegios comunitarios durante el otoño en California, se redujo en un 11 por ciento en general de 2019 a 2020, un 12 por ciento para estudiantes latinos, un 16 por ciento para afroamericanos y un enorme 22 por ciento para los estudiantes nativo americanos. Dijo también que las escuelas perdieron el doble de hombres que de mujeres.

El paquete de estímulo más reciente, incluye millones para que las universidades vuelvan a involucrar a la población estudiantil.

Fiest agrega que una gran cantidad de dinero se destina a la ayuda directa a los estudiantes.

"Tambien hay algunos fondos disponibles para becas de emergencia para estudiantes," dijo Fiest, "eso puede ayudar a pagos como cuidado de ninos, transporte o asistencia tecnologica."

Las universidades esperan que la caída en la matrícula sea temporal y que mejore a medida que la economía se recupera a causa del COVID.
