LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Ethan Koeler, residente del condado de Marshall, dice que se mostró escéptico con respecto a la vacuna de COVID-19. Luego, el joven de 29 años contrajo el coronavirus y fue hospitalizado por dos semanas con una cavidad torácica llena de líquido y un pulmón colapsado.

Koeler ahora está urgiendo a sus compañeros de Kentucky a que consideren vacunarse, como parte de una campaña estatal llamada "Take It From Me" / "Tómalo de mí" lanzada por la Fundación para una Kentucky Saludable y la Asociación Médica de Kentucky. Koeler dice que ahora cree que la vacuna lo habría mantenido fuera del hospital.

"Si hubiera sabido que la vacuna evitaría que me enfermara tanto, lo habría hecho, porque fue horrible," dice Koeler. "Si la vacuna puede ayudar un poco para que no tener los síntomas tan fuertes, les recomiendo que lo hagan. Pero, claro, sigue siendo la elección de cada uno."

Hasta ahora, el 62 por ciento de la población del estado se ha vacunado. Los condados de Woodford, Franklin, Fayette, Campbell y Boone tienen las tasas de vacunación más altas.

Koeler dice que está completamente recuperado y recientemente recibió su primer vacuna de COVID, porque los médicos dicen que todavía existe la posibilidad de que vuelva a contraer el virus.

"Me dijeron que definitivamente podría volver a contagiarme, y que podría pasar de nuevo por esto, dice Koeler. "Me recomendaron ampliamente que me pusiera la vacuna después de que me recuperara."

El Dr. Neil Moser de la Asociación Médica de Kentucky dice que ve casos como el de Koeler a diario. Espera que los residentes confíen en sus médicos, que la vacuna es segura, eficaz y necesaria para ayudar a poner fin a la pandemia.

"Las vacunas," dice Moser, "ya han estado disponibles durante casi un ano, se han administrado miles de millones de veces en todo el planeta, son seguras y muy, muy efectivas para salvar vidas."

Agrega que los expertos en salud pública están trabajando para aumentar las vacunas en los condados rezagados y regiones que experimentan algunas de las peores tasas de hospitalización.

"Spencer, Louisville, Christian, Elliott, Jackson, Hart, Ballard, Hickman, Casey y Knox tienen algunas de las tasas de vacunación mas bajas del país, no solo de Kentucky," dice Moser.

Hasta la semana pasada, más de 1,300 personas con infecciones por coronavirus fueron hospitalizadas, incluidas casi cuatrocientas en camas I-C-U, según datos estatales.
