Survey: Clean Energy is What Everyone Wants

May 18, 2009

Washington D.C. – Congress is expected to begin debate today on the American Clean Energy and Security Act, which supporters say would help transition the country to clean alternative forms of energy and create jobs in North Dakota at the same time. The Pew Environment Group finds in a new poll that there is strong bipartisan support both around the country and in North Dakota for action on energy independence and reducing global warming.

The director of the Pew Global Warming Campaign, Phyllis Cuttino, says the new survey mirrors other public opinion polls on the topic.

"The American voter believes very strongly that global warming is happening, it's happening now, and they want members of Congress and this government to take action to reduce global warming emissions."

She says the surveys found both Republicans and Democrats believe reducing dependence on foreign oil is important to the economy.

"Voters really believe that if America becomes more dependent on alternative sources of energy, jobs and the economy will both be better."

Cuttino says one of the arguments against climate change legislation is the so-called energy tax, but still, more than 60 percent of those polled strongly support the plan to curb global warming.
