"D-Day" For Same-Sex Marriage In California

Today is "D-Day" for same-sex marriage in California, when the California Supreme Court announces its decision on the legality of Proposition 8, the state's constitutional amendment banning gay marriage.

Regardless of the outcome, says Molly McKay of the group Marriage Equality USA, supporters of gay marriage are planning marches in 90 cities in California and across the country - either in protest or in celebration.

"Everyone who supports marriage equality will stand together, you know - hopefully we'll be celebrating. If not, we'll be organizing."

Supporters of Prop 8 say the voters have spoken and that marriage should be between a man and a woman. However, McKay believes momentum for same-sex marriage has been created by other states that have recently approved it and, if the court upholds the ban, her group will take the issue back to the voters.

"I think everyone's exhausted from this last campaign, and the last thing we want to do is to have to go back out, especially in this tough economy, to try to raise money - when all we want is the basic civil protections for our families that everyone else wants."

The California court is not only deciding the legality of the voter-approved Prop 8, but whether to uphold the marriages of an estimated 18,000 gay couples who wed before the measure passed in November. The court will post its decision online at www.courtinfo.ca.gov/opinions.
