Medicare open enrollment is underway, and seniors have until Dec. 7 to update their plans, if needed.

Lindsey Vanderbilt, director of communications for the Area Agency on Aging of East Texas, said it is important for recipients to review their plan each season.

"The plans change every year, the coverage changes every year, the costs can be different every year," Vanderbilt outlined. "It's important every year to review your plan options, you can look at them on medicare.gov."

Those registered for both Medicare and Medicaid may qualify for additional benefits with what's known as a Dual Special Needs Plan, which covers more than just basic health care.

Some dual plans offer zero dollar co-pays for prescription drugs, hearing and vision exams and virtual visits for people who qualify.

Marian Cabanillas of UnitedHealthcare Community and State, said more than 12 million people may qualify for the extra coverage to help with everyday expenses.

"You can buy fruits and vegetables and meat and seafood," Cabanillas explained. "You can also use it to buy over the counter products like toothpaste or Tylenol. And my favorite is you can actually use it to help pay for utility bills, like your internet service or your electricity or gas."

The enrollment deadline for Medicare and Medicaid, a well as the dual plans, is Dec. 7.
