It is almost time to select health insurance for the coming year in Georgia. Open enrollment dates are a little different depending on your type of coverage. Employer-sponsored coverage enrollment typically takes place between September and December. Medicare enrollment is open from October 15th to December 7th. And folks who want to get their insurance through the Affordable Care Act Marketplace can enroll starting November 1st.

Dr. Rhonda Randall, chief medical officer of Employer and Individual for UnitedHealthcare, said knowing your needs and some basic terminology will help you get the best value.

"I think it starts with learning the language, you know," she said. "Health insurance terms can be complicated, and some of them can be confused for others. So, things like deductibles, copays, coinsurance, premiums, etc. Be familiar with what those terms are, and what the costs associated with each one is."

She added UnitedHealthcare has an online glossary of terms, called "Just Plain Clear" that anyone can use. There is also a ""Medicare Made Clear" guide for people eligible for Medicare.

Due to the closure of nine rural hospitals in Georgia in the past decade, the demand for telehealth options has increased. Many health plans now include coverage for virtual doctor visits and mental-health services. However, Randall said it is important to understand the scope of coverage offered by any plan you are considering.

"Almost universally, plans will cover mental health care," she explained. "But you want to know what, specifically, you're going to have access to; how big is the network of therapists and psychiatrists, mental health professionals?"

Starting in fall 2024, Georgia plans to operate its own fully state-run exchange under Senate Bill 65, signed by Governor Brian Kemp.
