Los defensores de la atención infantil accesible obtuvieron victorias durante la sesión legislativa de este año en el estado de Washington, pero aún ven un margen de mejora.

Los legisladores invirtieron en una serie de programas que aumentan la financiación para los proveedores de cuidado infantil.

Genevieve Stokes, de Child Care Aware of Washington, dice que el estado está construyendo bases para el acceso universal de las familias.

"Las inversiones de este año han sido modestas, pero han abordado algunos de los aspectos cruciales que esperábamos se consideraran," reconoce Stokes.

Algunas de las inversiones incluyen $1.75 millones de dólares para consultas gratuitas sobre salud mental infantil y de primera infancia, más de $8 millones para el Programa de Educación y Asistencia a la Primera Infancia, y casi $7 millones en subsidios adicionales para capitalizar las instalaciones de aprendizaje temprano.

Sin embargo, Stokes dice que siguen persistiendo las brechas.

"La financiación de este año y lo que va hasta ahora no resuelve la crisis de los servicios de guardería para las familias con ingresos medios," asegura Stokes, "ni el problema de los cuidadores que no pueden ganarse la vida."

Stokes dice que no encontrar atención pone a los padres en aprietos y afecta la economía.

"Cuando los padres no encuentran guarderías o no pueden pagarlas, no pueden trabajar y se enfrentan a opciones imposibles con pocos buenos resultados," concluye Stokes.
