OR nurses at six Providence hospitals unite for union negotiations

Nurses at Providence hospitals across Oregon are coming together to fight for new union contracts. Negotiations are happening now or in the near future at six Providence facilities, including Saint Vincent, Newberg, Willamette Falls, Milwaukie, Hood River and Medford.

Brittany Foss, a registered nurse at Providence Hood River, said there's commonality in their demands across the six facilities, including lower health insurance costs, competitive wages, safe staffing and workplace safety.

"We know that coming together, we have increased leverage. We've got more power coming together trying to push our employer to do the right thing," she explained.

Foss noted that nurses at Hood River and Medford want pay parity with the Portland Metro Area facilities. Management has argued that the cost of living in those areas is lower. But Foss said nurses at these smaller hospitals are expected to know more because they see a wider range of patients. A spokesperson with Providence said the company has "locally focused, market-competitive wage and benefit packages."

Kathy Keane, a staff nurse at Providence Saint Vincent in Portland, said retention has been hard at her facility.

"I frequently see people come, they get orientation and training with us, and then they leave to go somewhere where they have better benefits, higher rates of pay - and I'm kind of tired of it," she contended.

Foss said the country is facing a nursing shortage and argued nurses deserve respect for their response to COVID-19.

"We went through so much and we had so many unsafe things happen to us throughout the pandemic, and if this is the new landscape of our workplace, we're going to fight to have some things in place to help protect ourselves and to help protect our patients," she said.

Nurses across the six facilities are at various stages in the contract negotiation process.
