It could be the next aerospace or computer industry…that’s what Northwest business leaders are saying about clean energy technology. More than 240 of them have signed a letter to lawmakers, asking them to help Washington and Oregon get their share of the 100-thousand new jobs and 11-billion dollars in investment capital being poured into this fledgling industry. Comments from Nancy Floyd, Portland’s managing director of Nth Power, (pronounced “enth”) a San Francisco-based venture capital firm.

Clean energy technology is the hottest trend in the business world. It’s expected to create more than 100-thousand new jobs and prompt 11-billion dollars’ worth of investments in the U-S, just in the next 2 years. Here in the Northwest, more than 240 business leaders have signed a letter being presented to state and federal lawmakers today…saying this region wants, and is ready for, a piece of the action. Nancy Floyd of Nth Power, a venture capital firm, says Washington already has an advantage because of its strong track record on environmental values.

"We want those jobs, we want that investment capital. But more significantly, we think that we are uniquely positioned as a region to attract those kinds of businesses."

Floyd says we also have a good stable of technology, agriculture and research talent in the job pool, all skills that will be in high demand. The letter urges federal and state lawmakers to enact the strongest clean energy policies in the nation…to attract new, clean energy producers and related businesses to the Northwest.

Nancy Floyd of Nth Power, a venture capital firm, says the business community has been slow to embrace clean energy technology…but they’re realizing it has bottom-line benefits.

"This really is the first time in the Northwest that the business community has stood up and said, ‘Economic growth can go hand-in-hand with environmental stewardship."

those kinds of businesses.

It could be the next aerospace or computer industry…that’s what Northwest business leaders are saying about clean energy technology. But, they add, lawmakers need to move faster…or miss the opportunity for new jobs and investment money. More from Chris Thomas.
