Congress will soon begin writing the 2007 Farm Bill, the core document of U.S farm policy. This coming weekend Senator Tom Harkin, chair of the Senate Agriculture Committee, will hold a series of Farm Bill listening sessions in Iowa. Dan Owens with the Center for Rural Affairs says this is a golden opportunity for Iowans to have a say on the Farm Bill, just as it's being written.

"We think he is really going to be hearing from people concerned with payment limitations. We think he'll be hearing that we need a Farm Bill that invests in our rural communities through entrepreneurship and small business development."

He says other hot topics will include assistance for new farmers, and help for farmers to preserve wildlife, soil, and water quality. For Owens, the listening sessions come at a time when Iowa farmers may have the most influence.

"Right now is a crucial time because they are just getting into actually writing the Farm Bill. And so to be able to get before that really all starts being written in Washington, D.C. is absolutely critical."

Owens believes many Congressional hearings are scripted events, but these sessions are open to anyone to give the Senator input on farm laws. If you plan to attend, he suggests that you prepare two to three points to cover and be ready to listen to the ideas others may bring to the table.

The Listening Sessions are planned for Saturday, March 24 in Eldridge, Peosta and Cedar Rapids. Information on the sessions is available at harkin.senate.gov.
