Just as the YouTube-CNN debate forced Democratic presidential contenders to focus on the needs of the internet generation, Native Americans leaders want to make sure candidates get serious about their issues as well. With Nevada a key early primary state, Chairman Arlan Melendez of the Reno Sparks Indian Colony is working with other tribes across the country to put together an "Indian Issues" platform for the '08 elections. Melendez says there's not much debate over their top issue.

"Not only in the state of Nevada, but nationwide, health care is one of the most important issues because of our life expectancy -- we don't live as long as the average American."

Because Congress plays such a major roll in allocating funds, Melendez hopes the Indian Issues platform will also be a factor in both the House and Senate elections next fall.

Melendez believes the Indian Issues platform will be adopted when the National Congress of American Indians meets this November, and he expects justice and health issues will be the main concerns.

"If you talk to many of the Native American leaders, it's probably one of the primary issues because of diabetes, methamphetamine use and addiction."

Melendez hopes the Indian issues platform will also influence candidates from all parties.

"I wish that the Republican Party would do a better job in outreach to Native Americans, in recognizing that they are the first Americans, and they have a longstanding political status that predates the Constitution."

The Republican CNN/YouTube debate is scheduled for September 17.
